Parking lot vandalism is a problem at commercial properties such as shopping plazas, office spaces, and car dealerships. Did you know that the same problems can happen at public transportation parking lots as well? Vandals slashed and damaged vehicles at the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) parking lot. Local authorities believe that vandals had three different attacks during one weekend. An MTA spokesperson said that there were security cameras on-site.
One of the parking lot vandalism victims saw a flatbed truck at about 4:00 P.M. He didn’t think anything out of the ordinary until he returned to the parking lot at 11:00 P.M. Two of his tires were slashed. He estimated that the replacements costs would be $700. The victim reported the criminal activity to the local authorities. The authorities said that the car owner was actually the sixth parking lot vandalism victim. The victim said that local police could have prevented the parking lot vandalism if they increased the parking lot security after the initial attacks. Outdoor surveillance cameras were not reported at the site.
Another parking lot vandalism victim found her car damaged after a two day business trip. All four tires were slashed. Local police left a note for her on top of her car. By the time she arrived the parking lot, several other vehicles were vandalized. Responding officers said that there were not outdoor surveillance cameras at the parking lot. Later, the MTA Police responded and said there were no surveillance cameras on the train platform. However, there was one outdoor security camera at the south end of the parking lot. The lone parking lot surveillance camera was unable to do anything to deter or stop the parking lot vandalism.
An MTA Police lieutenant said that a total of 13 vehicles had their tires cut in one weekend. Seven cars received property damage. The parking lot vandalism continued on during the next week. When the article was written, at least one more vehicle had their tires slashed.
