Intruder Spotted on Surveillance in Dealership Inventory Vehicle

Posted by Nile Coates on May 17, 2024

Protecting inventory vehicles at automotive dealerships from theft has been top-of-mind in the industry thanks to troubling spikes in crime rings targeting these properties, but other forms of vehicle damage and break-ins are still a concern. In this Arrest of the Month video, an intruder breaks into a vehicle in a restricted area on the property- and appears to go to sleep in the backseat.

At approximately 9:30 pm, a Stealth detection specialist monitoring an auto dealership client observed an intruder walking onto the property in a restricted area before gaining access to a sedan and entering the vehicle’s backseat. Onsite audible warnings were activated, but the intruder remained inside the vehicle. Local police were advised of the situation and responded onsite shortly after. The intruder was located and safely removed from the property in police custody.

Vagrancy and loitering in general present significant challenges for automotive dealership properties, impacting both the perception and security of these businesses. Dealerships, like other commercial properties, can be adversely affected by the presence of vagrants and loiterers, which may deter customers and affect business operations.

One of the main issues associated with vagrancy and loitering at dealership properties is the potential for property damage and vandalism. This can include graffiti, theft, and other forms of property damage, which not only lead to financial losses but also create a negative image that can deter potential customers. Moreover, the presence of loiterers can make customers and employees feel unsafe, impacting customer traffic and potentially employee retention.

The challenge is further compounded by the legal and ethical complexities involved in addressing these issues. Many cities have laws against loitering and vagrancy, but these laws often come under scrutiny for being vague or for criminalizing poverty. This legal ambiguity can make it difficult for businesses to enforce no-loitering policies without facing legal challenges.

Automotive dealerships can adopt several strategies to mitigate the issues of vagrancy and loitering. Improved lighting and the removal of potential sleeping areas can help deter loiterers. Keeping properties clean and free from debris also discourages loitering and contributes to a positive business image. Additionally, employing security measures such as live remote video monitoring can be effective. This technology allows for real-time monitoring of the property, enabling immediate responses to trespassing or suspicious activities.

Overall, while vagrancy and loitering are complex issues that require sensitive handling, there are effective strategies that automotive dealerships can implement to protect their properties and maintain a safe and welcoming environment for customers and staff.
