Intruder Caught After Escape Attempt at New York Auto Dealership

Posted by Hayes Gaines on Jul 12, 2024

Thefts and break-ins targeting vehicles and auto dealerships are at an alarming and record highs across the US and Canada. In this Arrest of the Month video, our live video surveillance caught an intruder at a Brooklyn, NYC dealership in the act.

At approximately 3:51 am, Stealth security professionals monitoring a New York auto dealership observed an intruder gaining access to the property after climbing over a fence. The observing monitoring operator immediately activated onsite audible warnings and local police dispatch was contacted. As operators continued to observe the situation, the intruder began pulling on door handles. Police arrived onsite as the intruder entered a vehicle and attempted to flee the scene but was ultimately detained.

In recent months, New York has experienced a significant surge in auto thefts and break-ins at auto dealerships. This trend has been particularly notable in areas such as New York City and counties including Erie, Monroe, and Niagara.

The rise in thefts has been attributed to various factors, including viral social media challenges that demonstrate how to steal specific vehicle models, as well as ongoing challenges in the criminal justice system exacerbated by the pandemic. Many of these thefts are perpetrated by young individuals, often associated with organized groups. This has led to a concerted effort by state and local governments to address the issue through enhanced security measures and community outreach programs.

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a comprehensive plan to combat auto thefts, which includes increased funding for law enforcement agencies to acquire advanced technology and equipment. The plan also focuses on youth justice alternatives to address the involvement of young people in these crimes.

In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has introduced a multifaceted strategy that emphasizes enforcement, education, and community partnerships. The NYPD has ramped up efforts by deploying specialized units with advanced technology, such as mobile license plate readers, to hotspot areas. Additionally, public education campaigns are being rolled out to inform vehicle owners about preventive measures they can take.

While some of these efforts may prove fruitful for private vehicle owners, it’s a different challenge that auto dealership owners and operators face. With their high-value inventory typically left vulnerable to thieves, trespassers, and vandals, a more comprehensive and proactive solution is needed.
