Construction Materials Thieves Caught in Broad Daylight

Posted by Paul Gross on Jul 15, 2022

With construction booming across North America and demand for materials flourishing right along with it, thefts have gotten progressively worse.

In this Arrest of the Month video, we caught two brazen thieves loading their truck with valuable wires they found sitting out on an active jobsite.

Just after 8:30 in the morning, a Stealth Monitoring security operator observed someone walking inside an active construction site. Moments later, a truck pulled up beside the perimeter fence and parked. Two subjects were seen pulling down wires from an upper part of the jobsite and loading them into the back of their truck.

Following site protocols, our operator activated an onsite speaker warning, then called to dispatch local police when that warning was ignored. Within minutes, a team of officers arrived. After questioning the male suspect, they placed him under arrest.

Safeguard Valuable Construction Materials with Remote Video Monitoring

For years, thieves have been stealing copper wires from construction sites. This high-grade material can fetch high dollars on the black market. Criminals see plenty of opportunities to make a quick buck with wires and other valuable materials lying around on construction sites. But their gain is your loss. When equipment goes missing, budgets and timelines could be greatly impacted.

As technology continues to become more effective and affordable, many construction companies are turning to remote video monitoring to help secure their sites. This proactive solution combines state-of-the-art video technology, advanced analytics and human intelligence to help deter crime before damage and loss happen.

Trained security operators monitor a jobsite in real time which allows them to be able to make quick judgements and respond appropriately. As you saw in the video, our monitoring operator quickly activated the on-site speaker to warn the trespassers they were being watched, as well as called police. Because we were watching a crime in progress, police elevated the priority level of the call and arrived while the suspects were still there.

The video showed one of two suspects getting arrested. While police were not able to initially locate the other individual, we were able to provide video footage and a description to help them in their investigation.
